Mucosal Inflammation: Review
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE), and eosinophilic colitis (EoC) have been diagnosed with an increasing frequency over the last decades. All these diseases share pathogenic similarities with respect to triggering by food antigens in the majority of patients once secondary causes of tissue eosinophilia have been excluded. While diagnostic criteria for EoE have been published, the exact criteria for EGE and EoC still need to be defined. This review highlights similarities and differences between affected patients when comparing the Western with the Eastern world. Summary: The incidence and prevalence of EoE are on the rise in countries from the Western and Eastern world. Very limited epidemiologic data exist regarding EGE and EoC. Characteristics of patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders regarding gender distribution, age at diagnosis, and associated comorbidities are similar when comparing Eastern with Western countries. Similar modalities are applied to diagnose EoE, EGE, and EoC Received: January 31, 2016 Accepted: March 2, 2016 Published online: April 22, 2016 Alain Schoepfer, MD Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois/CHUV Rue de Bugnon 44 CH–1011 Lausanne (Switzerland) E-Mail Alain.schoepfer @ chuv.ch © 2016 S. Portal to the interior: viral pathogenesis and natural compounds that restore mucosal immunity and modulate inflammation.
Most antigens, particularly viruses, enter the body through the mucosal epithelia where they are carried by afferent lymphatics to regional lymph nodes for presentation to the immune system. Although they share immunological similarities, immune processes that protect the mucosa are distinct from innate and acquired immunity. The barrier formed by the intestinal mucosa is the most studied, with...
متن کاملPlatelets: new players in the mucosal scenario of inflammatory bowel disease.
Besides their classical haemostatic task, platelets are now recognized as novel cells deeply involved in inflammation. Compelling evidence support their role as active player in mucosal tissue injury that occurs in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In both forms of inflammatory bowel disease platelets contribute to microvascular endothelial activation and recruitment of inflammatory cells...
متن کاملHypoxia and Integrin-Mediated Epithelial Restitution during Mucosal Inflammation
Epithelial damage and loss of intestinal barrier function are hallmark pathologies of the mucosal inflammation associated with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. In order to resolve inflammation and restore intestinal integrity the mucosa must rapidly and effectively repair the epithelial barrier. Epithelial wound healing is a highly complex and co-ordinated process and the factors ...
متن کاملColorectal Cancer and Dysplasia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Review of Disease Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Management.
Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) characterized by recurrent episodes of mucosal inflammation. This chronic mucosal inflammation has several potential consequences, one of which is the occurrence of colitis-associated colorectal cancer. Over the past decade, our understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and overall approach to diagnosin...
متن کاملClinical relevance of endoscopic assessment of inflammation in ulcerative colitis: Can endoscopic evaluation predict outcomes?
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition characterised by a relapsing and remitting course. Symptom control has been the traditional mainstay of medical treatment. It is well known that histological inflammatory activity persists despite adequate symptom control and absence of endoscopic inflammation. Current evidence suggests that presence of histological inflammation ...
متن کاملImaging of Mucosal Inflammation: Current Technological Developments, Clinical Implications, and Future Perspectives
In recent years, various technological developments markedly improved imaging of mucosal inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Although technological developments such as high-definition-, chromo-, and autofluorescence-endoscopy led to a more precise and detailed assessment of mucosal inflammation during wide-field endoscopy, probe-based and stationary confocal laser micros...
